  • Car appeal is subjective

My family bought the first Ascent delivered to the northeast and since then we’ve driven east to west across the US and north and south. We’ve probably logged more miles than anyone else and we’re still in love in every way. The turbo allows me to easily pass on the highway. The storage capacity is adequate for an SUV and on par with the competition. We’ve done off roading with zero problems. I love the wide side doors. We’ve towed several different trailers and had zero problems. I’ve driven icy snowy roads and loaded it with 800lbs or more of building material. I think for me, a Subaru will always represent higher quality because I’ve driven to crazy places (like mount Washington) where competitors suffered brake issues that you’d never see while driving to and from Walmart. I’ve seen Subarus stress tested, beaten about, and then keep on trucking. Maybe your experience differs, but for me the Ascent will always be 5 stars.

First ever a suv that is great to drive in summer and winter. Without worrying about getting stuck in dirt, sand, or snow. Watch out American auto manufacturers!!
  • 2019 Ascent Test Drive- Don't Understand the Hype

I am looking to buy the best mid-size SUV possible for my family. The 2019/2020 Ascent was on my list along with the 2019/2020 Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. The Ascent is rated high by publications I trust, but I did not understand the high ratings and hype based on my test drive of a 2019 Ascent Premium built in April of 2019. It was only a 20 minute drive. I immediately did not like the powertrain or suspension at all. The engine is powerful but was loud and not smooth in response. The CVT and engine pairing was sluggish to respond to light throttle and was jerky when more throttle was delivered. The suspension felt confident most of the time but overall seemed floaty and rocky at low speed when going over road and parking lot transitions. The Ascent had a roof rack. I could not believe the wind howl it produced. Maybe in was installed wrong, but above 50 mph the wind howl was noticeable and annoying at highway speeds. I was honestly shocked and expected something more refined. Is the Ascent extremely safe, I bet it is. I felt the safety systems working well during the test drive and they seemed to be as good as you can buy. Will it last? Subaru's recent reliability ratings say it will. But in my opinion, in regards to overall powertrain refinement it is no match in comparison to the smooth powertrains I experienced when test driving the 2019 Toyota Highlander and 2020 Kia Telluride and 2020 Hyundai Palisade. If you can get buy the jerky powertrain and safety is paramount maybe the Ascent is still for you. Perhaps the Ascent I test drove was an anomaly.
